Julian Week In-Review

  • Julian is starting to lecture us. He looks up at us quite sternly and begin a two minute discussion about topics philosophical. Unfortunately his vocal skills are still rudamentary, so we're not always sure what he's telling us, but he certainly seems to have a lot on his mind. He has also taken to long discussions with surrounding objects and the air itself.

Busy week for Julian

Been a big week for Julian:

  • Last Wednesday he had his first major nightmare. He woke up at 3 am screaming and wouldn't be comforted until we took him out of bed and carried him around a bit.
  • His laugh continues to develop. Although I haven't had the fortune of hearing it, Laris has heard him gearing up for a real belly laugh.

Got up early to do it too, figuring there would be a line. There was, but it didn't take me above 30 minutes to find the place (10 minutes right there since the Google Maps had a different name than the street sign), get in, vote and get out.

A Gem: manybooks.net

This last weekend, while discussing H.P Lovecraft I was informed that copyright has lapsed and that his collective works have just entered the public domain. Because I'd rather enjoyed the few Lovecraft stories I'd read, I decided to see if I couldn't find some some of them online. What I found in fact is a site that not only fulfills my Lovecraft needs, but does so while impressing the hell out of me at the same time: manybooks.net.

Bill Watterson, Come Back (Please?)

Want Bill Watterson Back...

But really, who doesn't? Pearls Before Swine is an excellent comic, but I'm with Rat on this one. I wants my Calvin & Hobbes back.

Airport "Security"

The Atlantic - "The Things He Carried"

I've been saying for years now that so-called "Airport Security" is a sham. Ever since 911 the TSA has been making it increasingly unpleasant for the average traveler to fly. Barriers and layers of useless procedure now stand between you and the gates, not to mention at least one shoe removal.

Mozy - DirectoryIterator Error

This last week I've noticed that our family server was was responding very slowly. Some investigating turned up a rampage logd process that was gobbling up 40-80% of my poor old G4's CPU. Killing the process did no good, it just respawned. Turning off Timemachine (a known culprit of rogue logd processes) didn't help either. A look at the console turned up the true culprit: Mozy.
